About US

Mission

Our mission is to build a better, healthier East Harlem by rescuing and distributing healthy and fresh food while also enlightening our community about the consequences of hunger and poor nutrition. We dedicate our non-profit to addressing the health, environmental, and economic effects of food waste in our community.

Vision

We envision a community In which everyone has access to high-quality, nutritious meals, knows the impacts of hunger, and is dedicated to building a better, healthier community. We envisage a world in which a healthy environment and access to healthy food are welcomed and appreciated. We aim to eradicate hunger and promote the health and well-being of our community by developing efficient solutions that build people, families, and communities through collaborative partnerships.

Values

Established in 2020

The Barrio Fridge is a collaborative mutual aid initiative led by Two women who are passionate about addressing the health food disparity in our beloved neighborhood of East Harlem, New York, The premise of our initiative is to “Take what you need, leave what you don’t”— in hopes of salvaging food that would otherwise go to waste and building a self-sufficient ecosystem with the help of local businesses and community members.

El Barrio and many other Black and Brown neighborhoods deal with the fall-out of racial injustice in the form of food deserts and food swamps. This means that community members have minimal access to the basic human right that is fresh food.

We must also note that the economic hardships many face in East Harlem—a low income neighborhood—has been exacerbated due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Shortened hours and increased unemployment has made it progressively more difficult to secure food for many.
For this reason, our community fridge will be stocked daily with donated produce as a free resource for local residents.
